Highland is a quiet, working-class neighborhood with modest, single-family homes. The neighborhood is probably best known for the Highland Mall, once a prominent shopping center that has fallen into disuse in recent years, and the Department of Public Safety office to renew driver’s licenses and car registrations.

Highland is a suburban neighborhood that borders some highly desirable areas of town to the west and some not-so-desirable ones to the east. Although the area has gone downhill somewhat in recent years, it remains a quiet, low-key, middle class neighborhood.

The population is racially mixed with a rising Asian population. Highland is one of the older neighborhoods in Austin and retains much of its character, with older, modestly sized homes on residential streets. Home prices are very affordable, making this an attractive location for young singles and families.

The neighborhood borders the Brentwood neighborhood to the west, so the park, playgrounds, ball courts, pool, highly-rated schools, and other amenities of that area are accessible to Highland residents.

The neighborhood borders I-35 and Hwy. 290, two major local thoroughfares in the city. Public transportation by bus and rail are also easily accessible, and even a Greyhound bus terminal is in the neighborhood.

Within the neighborhood, there are some ethnic restaurants, eateries, a coffee shop, a movie theater, a strip mall with various businesses, and of course the Highland Mall, with retail stores. Austin Community College also has an office and classrooms here.
