Why Choose Ornamental Iron Fencing

Iron fencing isn’t the cheapest option—but for the right property, it’s the best option. Here’s what sets it apart:

Black metal fence with a closed gate in a grassy yard, flanked by trees under a clear blue sky. A white truck is parked on the left side.
  • Unmatched durability. Iron and steel fencing is built to last 50+ years with proper maintenance. It withstands impacts, weather, and attempted intrusions that would damage lighter materials.
  • Security. Heavy-gauge steel pickets are virtually impossible to cut, bend, or break through. The height and pointed finials deter climbing. This is serious fencing for serious security.
  • Curb appeal. Nothing elevates a property’s appearance like ornamental iron. It adds value, makes a strong first impression, and complements architectural styles from Victorian to modern.
  • Design flexibility. Iron can be shaped, scrolled, and customized in ways other materials can’t match. Want a family crest on your gate? Decorative panels with custom patterns? Iron makes it possible.
  • Timeless style. Iron fencing never goes out of fashion. The fence you install today will look as elegant in 30 years as it does now—unlike trend-driven materials that date quickly.

Want the iron look without the maintenance? Consider aluminum fencing—it mimics ornamental iron without rusting. We install both and can help you decide which to choose.

Ornamental Iron vs. Ornamental Steel

You’ll hear both terms used interchangeably, but there are differences:

Wrought Iron (Traditional)

  • Handworked iron with low carbon content
  • Extremely durable and corrosion-resistant
  • Heavier and more expensive
  • Authentic historic material for restoration projects
  • Increasingly rare; most modern “iron” fencing is actually steel

Ornamental Steel (Modern Standard)

  • Manufactured steel tubing and components
  • Excellent strength and durability
  • More affordable than true wrought iron
  • Wider variety of prefabricated styles
  • What most people mean when they say “iron fence” today

Our approach: We install both. For historic properties requiring authentic wrought iron, we source and work with traditional materials. For most residential and commercial projects, ornamental steel delivers the same look at a better value.

Ornamental Iron Fence Styles

We build and install a range of styles to match your property:

Classic/Traditional Vertical pickets with spear-point or fleur-de-lis finials. Decorative scrollwork on rails or between pickets. The timeless look associated with historic estates and upscale neighborhoods.

Contemporary/Modern Clean lines, flat-top pickets, minimal ornamentation. Horizontal elements and geometric patterns. Popular in Austin’s newer developments and modern architecture.

Victorian Elaborate scrollwork, ornate finials, and decorative panels. Authentic period styling for historic homes and restoration projects.

Estate/Grand Entry Tall fencing with matching driveway gates designed to make a statement. Often includes brick or stone columns, custom metalwork, and integrated lighting.

Pool Code Compliant Ornamental iron designed to meet Texas pool barrier requirements—proper height, no climbable features, compatible with self-closing gate hardware.

Custom Fabrication

One of iron’s greatest advantages is customization. We fabricate:

  • Custom gate designs with monograms, family crests, or property names
  • Decorative panels with unique patterns, scrollwork, or geometric designs
  • Matching components for stairs, railings, and balconies
  • Radius sections that curve around landscaping, driveways, or architectural features
  • Height variations transitioning from taller entry sections to lower perimeter fencing

If you can sketch it, we can likely build it. Custom fabrication adds cost and lead time, but the result is fencing that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

Iron Fence Heights

We install ornamental iron in standard heights:

  • 3–4 feet — Decorative front yard boundaries, garden borders
  • 5 feet — Standard residential perimeter, moderate security
  • 6 feet — Enhanced security, pool enclosures, full property perimeters
  • 8+ feet — Estate entries, commercial security, high-value properties

Taller fences require heavier posts and may need permits. We’ll advise on the appropriate height for your application.

Finishing and Coatings

Iron and steel require protection from rust. We offer:

  • Powder Coating (Recommended) Factory-applied finish baked onto the metal at high temperature. Extremely durable, available in multiple colors (black is most popular), and resists chipping and fading far better than paint. Most of our ornamental fencing is powder-coated.
  • Galvanization + Powder Coating: For maximum protection, steel is hot-dip galvanized (zinc-coated) before powder coating. Two layers of defense against corrosion. Recommended for pool areas and high-moisture environments.
  • Paint: Traditional option for true wrought iron and custom work. Requires primer and quality exterior paint. Will need repainting every 5–10 years, depending on conditions.
  • Patina/Rust Finish: Intentionally weathered look where rust is allowed to develop and then sealed. Creates an aged, artistic appearance. Not for everyone, but striking the right property.

Our Ornamental Iron Installation Process

1

Design Consultation We visit your property, discuss your vision, and assess the site. For custom work, we’ll sketch concepts and review design options. You’ll receive a detailed proposal with specifications and pricing.

2

Fabrication Standard panels are ordered from quality manufacturers. Custom components are fabricated in our shop or by our fabrication partners. Lead time for custom work is typically 3–4 weeks.

3

Site Preparation We mark the fence line, schedule utility locates, and pull any required permits. For fences with masonry columns, foundation work happens at this stage.

4

Post Installation Steel posts are set in concrete at substantial depth—30+ inches for most applications, deeper for tall fences or gates. This foundation is critical; iron fencing is heavy and must be properly anchored.

5

Panel and Rail Installation: Fence sections are attached to posts with brackets or welded connections,s depending on design. We align everything carefully for consistent spacing and level top rails.

6

Gate Installation: Gates are hung on heavy-duty hinges sized for the gate’s weight. Hardware is installed and adjusted for smooth operation. For automated gates, we coordinate with gate operator installation.

7

Final Inspection and Touch-Up We inspect welds, connections, and finish. Any scratches from installation are touched up. We walk through the completed project with you and answer questions about care.

Ornamental Iron Fence Maintenance

Iron fencing lasts decades—but it does require some attention:

  • Inspect annually. Walk your fence line and look for rust spots, chipped finish, loose connections, or damage. Early detection prevents bigger problems.
  • Address rust promptly. If you see rust forming, wire-brush the area, apply rust converter, prime, and touch up with matching paint. Don’t let rust spread.
  • Clean periodically. Rinse with a garden hose to remove dirt, pollen, and debris. For stubborn grime, use mild soap and a soft brush.
  • Lubricate hinges. Gate hinges benefit from annual lubrication to prevent squeaking and wear.
  • Repaint when needed. Painted iron fences need fresh paint every 5–10 years, depending on sun exposure and conditions. Powder-coated fences typically go 15–20 years before needing refinishing.
  • Check for ground contact. If soil or mulch builds up against the fence, it can hold moisture and accelerate rust. Keep a gap between the bottom rail and the ground.

FAQ — Automatic Gate Installation (Austin)

Ornamental iron fencing typically runs $40–$100+ per linear foot installed, depending on height, style complexity, and whether custom fabrication is involved. Standard prefabricated panels are on the lower end; custom designs with scrollwork and decorative elements are higher. We provide detailed quotes after assessing your project.

With proper maintenance, 50+ years. Iron and steel are extremely durable materials. The finish (paint or powder coating) will need periodic attention, but the structural fence itself lasts generations.

It can if it is not properly finished and maintained. We powder-coat all our iron fencing for maximum rust protection. When rust does appear, prompt treatment prevents spread. Regular inspection and touch-up keep rust in check.

Traditional wrought iron is hand-worked iron with very low carbon content—extremely durable but expensive and increasingly rare. Modern ornamental steel is manufactured steel tubing that mimics the look of wrought iron at a lower cost. Most “iron” fences installed today are actually ornamental steel.

Yes—we build iron pool fences that meet Texas barrier codes. The key is proper picket spacing (no more than 4 inches) and compatible self-closing, self-latching gate hardware. Iron’s durability makes it an excellent choice for a long-term pool fence.

Yes. While black is traditional and most popular, powder coating is available in virtually any color. Bronze, dark green, and white are also common choices. Custom colors can be matched for an additional fee.

Annual inspection for rust and damage, prompt touch-up of any chips or scratches, periodic cleaning, and lubrication of gate hinges. Painted fences need repainting every 5–10 years; powder-coated fences last longer between refinishing.

Usually, yes. We can fabricate new sections to match existing designs, or source compatible prefabricated panels. If your existing fence uses discontinued components, we’ll recommend the closest available match.

Standard prefabricated fencing: 2–4 days for most residential projects. Custom-fabricated fencing: add 3–4 weeks for fabrication before installation begins. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during the consultation.

For many applications, yes. Aluminum fencing delivers a similar ornamental look, costs less, and requires virtually no maintenance since it doesn’t rust. The trade-off is that aluminum is lighter and less substantial—it won’t match iron’s heft and security for high-end applications.
