In 2006, the voters of Austin approved Proposition 3 (Parks and Parkland bond), which issued around $84.7 million for the construction, renovation, improvement, and equipment of public parks, natural areas, recreational centers, and related facilities.

Northwest Recreation Center was one of those improvements and expansions. The project has included additional 7,500 square feet to expand the center and install modern amenities. This aims to accommodate the growing needs of the Northwest Austin Community.

On July 9, 2011, Northwest Recreation Center reopened with a larger green facility situated in Northwest Austin close to Mopac (Loop 1) and Northland Drive.
