A Brief History

Bright Leaf Preserve started as Georgia Lucas’ inspiration. She bought land in 34 separate real estate transactions to put together a property that she called Bright Leaf. Refer to This Page for More Tips

After Georgia’s death, she wanted to preserve the property so everyone could appreciate and benefit from its history and beauty. She also wished that the property become a place for visitors to enjoy guided hikes. From that activity, they will learn about the land and make it a spot for meditation and reflection.

Initially, Bright Leaf Preserve was under the management of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Today, the land is owned and managed by the Austin Community Foundation. This private organization upholds Georgia’s will and maintains the land.

What is the Role of Bright Leaf Preserve in the Community?

Gathering 216 acres of connecting undeveloped land within Austin’s city limits would be impossible today. But thanks to Georgia Lucas’ effort a few years ago, Austin has a beautiful and tranquil nature preserve. Now, the community’s part is to protect it for future generations.

Bright Leaf Preserve acts as a powerful teaching tool for visitors of ages who explore its trails. For example, the Hill Country and Texas geology is evident in different rocks and fossils. Plus, the quarry areas let visitors see how the sediment layers were deposited at the bottom of the waters that used to cover the state.
