A Brief History
Austin Country Club started operating in 1899, making it one of Texas’ oldest golf clubs. After 50 years, the country club moved to a new location on Riverside Drive. But it again moved to another set in 1984 at a 180 acres Davenport Ranch site.
Alice and Pete Dye were responsible for laying out the course on land near Lake Austin. They have also been tasked to route the opening 7 holes on a large, flat terrain beside the water. Then, the remaining holes were set out on the property’s hillier parts.
Severe elevation changes occurred on holes 8 to 18, where Deer Creek Canyon was introduced across holes 11 to 13. This led a commentator to describe the back 9 as “a wild ride, a golf version of a bucking bronco (and) not for the faint of heart or rickety of swing.”
In 2016, Austin Country Club hosted the WGC Match Play Championship after a once-only stop at TPC Harding Club in 2015 and a long stay at Dove Mountain. Since then, this significant event has remained at Austin Country Club.
